Why Clean Air Matters in Your Space
The Real Impact of Indoor Air

The air inside your building does more than fill the room-it affects how people feel, work, and interact. Modern buildings are great at keeping in heat and cool air, but they also trap things you don’t want, like fine particles, chemicals, allergens, and ultrafine pollutants. In fact, indoor air can sometimes be several times more polluted than what’s outside. The smallest particles, known as ultrafine particles, are especially concerning because they slip past most filters, settle deep in the lungs, and even enter the bloodstream. These particles have been linked to health problems like respiratory issues, heart disease, and even cognitive decline. Children, older adults, and anyone with health concerns are particularly vulnerable. When you improve your indoor air, you’re not just making people more comfortable-you’re helping reduce sick days, boost productivity, and create a safer environment for everyone.

Air Quality Management in Print Shops

VOCs, Particulates & UFPs

Print shops — whether digital, offset, or screen-based, are environments with elevated levels of airborne contaminants, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and particulate matter (PM). These contaminants arise from inks, toners, paper dust, and high-speed machinery. Of particular concern are ultrafine particles (UFPs <0.1 µm), which are easily inhaled and penetrate deeply into the lungs and bloodstream. Air quality control in print environments must address both VOC concentration and particle load — especially for facilities using solvent-based inks, toner-based machines, or heat-set printing technologies.

VOC Control in Print Shops

Several factors influence VOC emission rates in print shops. The type of printing process-such as offset, flexographic, digital, or screen printing-plays a significant role, as does the composition of the ink, with solvent-based inks typically emitting more VOCs than water-based alternatives.

Equipment density, including the number of printers, room size, and ceiling height, will also affect how VOCs accumulate and disperse within the workspace.

Local regulations governed by organizations like OSHA, the EPA, and regional air quality districts also impact emission rates by setting standards and requirements for air quality management.

Why Ultrafine Particles (UFPs) Matter

Toner-based and heat-set print technologies are known to generate ultrafine particles (UFPs), which are smaller than 0.1 micrometers. These particles are invisible and odorless, making them difficult to detect, yet they are highly biologically reactive.

Unfortunately, standard HVAC filters with MERV ratings between 8 and 11 are not effective at capturing UFPs – allowing these tiny particles to remain airborne. In addition to UFPs, byproducts such as ozone and emissions from fusers further contribute to respiratory burdens in print shop environments.

The health risks associated with exposure to UFPs are significant. These particles can cause inflammation and oxidative stress in the body, which may worsen existing respiratory conditions such as asthma and COPD, as well as cardiovascular diseases.

Because of their extremely small size, UFPs can translocate into the bloodstream, reaching various organs and potentially even the brain, raising concerns about their long-term impact on overall health.

Reducing Particulate & VOC Exposure

Effective ventilation is crucial for maintaining healthy air quality in print facilities. In general print areas, it is recommended to maintain 10 to 15 air changes per hour (ACH) to adequately dilute airborne contaminants. However, in high-emission zones – such as those near toner stations, solvent-based presses, or binding equipment – the air exchange rate should be increased to 15 to 30 ACH or even higher to manage the greater volume of pollutants.

To further control exposure, local exhaust ventilation (LEV) should be installed at known emission points, including ink mixing stations and press exhaust zones. This targeted approach captures contaminants directly at the source, preventing them from spreading throughout the facility.

Supplemental air purification using HEPA and carbon-filtered air purifiers can be highly effective in areas with elevated concentrations of particulates or VOCs. These purifiers help remove fine particles, odors, and chemical vapors, particularly in locations where standard HVAC or LEV systems may not provide sufficient protection.

Controlled Environment Agriculture

Cleaner Air... Healthier Crops... Higher Yields.

In the precision-driven world of Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA), every variable-light, temperature, humidity, and CO₂ is meticulously optimized to maximize crop health and yieldYet, one critical factor often goes unnoticed: air quality. Airborne contaminants like mold spores, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and ultrafine particulates (UFPs) silently threaten crop consistency, regulatory compliance, and profitability.

FILTR Revolution bridges this gap, offering a science-backed solution to safeguard indoor grow environments. Combining decades of expertise from high-stakes industries like pharmaceuticals and food production, this system delivers cleanroom-grade air purification tailored to the unique demands of CEA.

The Critical Role of Air Quality

CEA’s sealed environments excel at optimizing growth conditions but also trap airborne pollutants that traditional farming disperses outdoors. Mold spores, which proliferate in humid settings, can colonize plant surfaces, reducing yields by up to 20% in affected crops. Similarly, VOCs emitted from equipment, cleaning agents, or even grow media liners induce oxidative stress in plants, altering metabolite profiles and diminishing product quality. Perhaps most insidious are ultrafine particles (UFPs <0.1 µm), which bypass standard HVAC filters (MERV 8–11) and deposit on stomata, impairing photosynthesis and nutrient uptake.

FILTR Revolution addresses these challenges head-on with a multi-layered defense:

  1. HEPA H13 Filtration: Captures 99.995% of particles down to 0.01 µm, including mold, bacteria, and UFPs.
  2. Activated Carbon: Neutralizes VOCs and odor-causing compounds, maintaining terpene profiles in aromatic crops.
  3. Bipolar Ionization: Breaks down pathogens and clusters fine particles for easier filtration-without ozone byproducts.
  4. Real-Time Monitoring: Sensors track PM2.5, VOCs, humidity, and temperature, alerting growers to deviations before they escalate.

By reducing biological stressors, growers report more consistent growth cycles, reduced crop loss, and enhanced potency in medicinal strains.

Advanced Protection for CEAs

In tightly sealed grow environments, the air you circulate directly affects the health and productivity of your plants. Without proper filtration, harmful contaminants can accumulate and spread, putting your entire operation at risk.

Common airborne threats include:

  • Fungal spores like powdery mildew and Botrytis, which can decimate crops
  • Bacterial pathogens that cause blight, wilting, or leaf spots
  • Pollen and insect debris that disrupt purity and promote infestations
  • Dust and organic particles that clog plant stomata and harbor microbes
  • Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) from equipment or cleaning agents that may stress sensitive crops

Most airborne contaminants that affect plant health—such as mold spores, bacterial pathogens, and dust—are larger than 1 micron in size.

FILTR Revolution is engineered to combat these challenges by delivering clean, ultrafine-filtered air while neutralizing odors and chemical pollutants—supporting healthy plants, higher yields, and a more consistent product.

With a filtration efficiency of 99.99996% at 0.5µm, FILTR Revolution makes removing larger particles effortless — providing growers with a clean air solution that supports healthy plants, higher yields, and greater consistency.

Safeguarding & Unlocking Potential

Regulatory scrutiny in CEAs intensifies as markets demand transparency. PM2.5 levels above 12 µg/m³ not only risk non-compliance with EPA guidelines but also correlate with stunted root development in aeroponic systems. FILTR’s cleanroom-grade filtration ensures particulate counts stay below 5 µg/m³-meeting even California’s stringent air quality standards.

For indoor growers, the system’s VOC scrubbing proves invaluable. By eliminating ethylene from aging HVAC systems or formaldehyde from particleboard shelving, FILTR preserves delicate profiles critical for lab testing. Post-harvest, its bipolar ionization reduces surface microbes on trimmed flowers by 72%, extending shelf life.

Future-Proof Your Grow

In an industry where margins hinge on predictability, FILTR Revolution transforms air quality from an overlooked variable into a measurable asset. By partnering with a system proven in FDA-regulated environments, CEA operators gain more than clean air-they secure resilience against the invisible threats undermining their investment. Let your crops thrive in air as precise as your climate controls.
